Virgin Media has issued a statement after customers woke up without internet in Greater Manchester – hours after an outage began last night. Customers across the region have reported being without broadband this morning (December 12).

Manchester Evening News readers on Facebook reported issues in areas including Newton Heath, Pendleton, Little Hulton, Broughton, Chadderton, Middleton and Walkden. Other customers took to X and Down Detector to share their experiences.

Virgin Media says engineers have been working to resolve the issue, involving damaged fibres used in its broadband network. It says work has taken place throughout the night and continues this morning.

A spokesperson for Virgin Media said: “We’re aware of an issue affecting services for customers in the Manchester area which has been caused by a break in a fibre cable. Our engineers have been working flat out overnight to repair the damaged fibres and will continue to do so to restore services as quickly as possible.

“We apologise to those affected.” Multiple customers have reported being told by Virgin Media that the issue in Greater Manchester will be fixed by 4.12pm today.

Teraza Tray Denniston commented on the M.E.N.’s Facebook page: “Mines been down since half 9 last night. Still not back on when I’ve got up this morning.”

Paul Mills wrote: “Mines been off from 7pm last night still not working.” Mark Elliott added: “Down all night and still playing up this morning.”

Down Detector had shown issues in other parts of the UK over the last 24 hours including London and Birmingham, but Virgin Media says the outage is only affecting the Greater Manchester area, with no known outages in those locations.
