Hollow Knight: Silksong is getting free DLC — and sooner than expected

Hollow Knight: Silksong is getting a free expansion, developer Team Cherry announced Monday. It’s called Sea of Sorrow and will be out in 2026.

In other words: Get ready for “sea of sorrow when???” comments on every gaming showcase for the foreseeable future.

Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow, an expansion that follows that Mission: Impossible titling construction, is “nautically themed,” Team Cherry said in a blog post. Details are otherwise light, though a teaser trailer showed protagonist Hornet standing on a rock as waves crash around her.

Alongside Sea of Sorrow, Team Cherry is also working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the original Hollow Knight that aims to bring it to visual parity with Silksong‘s Switch 2 edition. Hollow Knight Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will feature improved frame rates, sharper resolution, and other graphical updates that distinguish the Switch 2 edition of Silksong from its original Switch edition. The upgrade will be free for anyone who already owns Hollow Knight on Switch.

Both updates are planned for a broad 2026 window. Of course, Silksong itself infamously began development as DLC for the original Hollow Knight before Team Cherry pivoted it to a stand-alone entry, realizing its scale had far outstripped what was feasible for an expansion. Silksong was one of the best-regarded games of 2025. It was nominated for five awards at the The Game Awards this year, including Game of the Year, and ultimately won Best Action/Adventure Game.
