Work to reconfigure Greyfriars Junction in Bedford town centre will begin on 5th January 2026. The upgrades are part of Bedford Town Deal’s £22.6 million initiative to revitalise the town centre, supported by Government funding, Bedford Borough Council, and the Bedford Town Deal Board.
Focussed within Greyfriars car park to Midland Road, this project will add cycling and pedestrian infrastructure to improve safety and accessibility for all. Alongside this, plans include provisions for current and future bus travel, with local bus operators collaborating with the Council to minimise disruptions during construction.
Bedfordshire Police has contributed £250,000 towards the works, which will also support future development opportunities at the site of the former police station and surrounding areas.
Samantha Laycock, Chair of the Bedford Town Deal Board, said, “This project exemplifies our commitment to transforming Bedford into a more vibrant and sustainable town. The improvements at Greyfriars Junction will not only enhance safety and accessibility but also pave the way for exciting new investment and community opportunities.”
Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Planning and Prosperity, added, “By improving this key approach to our town centre, we will be continuing to make Bedford a safer, more accessible, and better-connected town. These changes support our local economy and enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives, works, or visits here.”
The Italian Statue at the roundabout will be restored and relocated. Public engagement remains a priority, and residents, local businesses, and stakeholders can meet the project team and review plans at a stall near the front of the old Police Station on 18th December 2025 from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
