Former Cardiff City star and Wales international Aaron Ramsey has directly addressed his Mexico exit for the first time, stating he was surprised and disappointed that his contract was terminated.

Ramsey had joined Pumas in Liga MX but only played six times for the Mexican side with injury curtailing his game-time.

He was also beset my personal anguish on the other side of the Atlantic, with his dog Halo disappearing, something the family described as “haunting”.

Ramsey and his family returned to Wales at the end of October and the former Arsenal player was recently working with Craig Bellamy’s staff in an informal capacity at the Vale with the national team.

He had told talkSPORT last month that he was seriously considering coaching as his next step in his career but did not address his playing future.

On Monday evening he posted on Instagram thanking his former manager and the staff at the club for their help during “a difficult time with injuries”.

But he also expressed his disappointment, suggesting he was ready to play again, before his contract was ripped up, which left him with “no choice but to come home to Wales”.

“I would like to thank the Mexican people for their kindness and generosity and making me and my family feel so welcome in Mexico City,” he said.

“I also want to give a big thanks to the manager, the coaching staff and particularly the medical staff for helping me through what was a difficult time with injuries.

“However with their help and a lot of hard work I was ready and match fit for the remaining games and I was looking forward to giving my best to the Pumas.

“Unfortunately my contract was terminated which was a surprise and obviously disappointing. Therefore I had no choice but to come home to Wales. Thank you again for all the support through the time we spent in Mexico. It’s a beautiful place and we will definitely come back to visit soon.”

Ramsey had taken charge of Cardiff’s last three games of last season and although he couldn’t stave off relegation, the coaching bug appears to have bitten him.

“Absolutely, that’s the route I can see myself taking,” he said to talkSPORT.

“I’m doing my Pro Licence now and I’ve really enjoyed the coaching I’ve done with Cardiff and Wales. It’s addictive.”
