Whisky and gin drinkers told to check bottles as officials issue ‘do not consume’ warning – full list

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) has issued an alert urging the public “not to purchase or consume” whisky and gin manufactured by Kimbland Distillery Ltd, warning that these products could present a danger to health.

Officials confirmed that the Orkney-based producer has been operating without the required safety controls and has failed to provide evidence that its spirits meet required standards.

Head of Incidents at FSS, Stuart McAdam, stated: “Following close collaboration with the Local Authority, we are warning consumers not to drink any products from the Kimbland Distillery due to safety concerns.

“As we approach the festive break, we want to make sure that anyone who may have purchased these for themselves or as a gift knows about the potential risk that these products may pose.”

Affected products “to be aware of” include New Make Spirit of Whisky in all available sizes, alongside three gin varieties: Sanday Tempest Gin, Sanday Sunset Gin, and Sanday No.1 Gin (all in 70cl bottles).

Filled barrels and casks from the distillery are also covered by the warning.

The FSS has instructed enforcement bodies throughout Scotland to locate and contact any retailers potentially stocking these items.

Although evidence suggests sales have been concentrated primarily within Orkney, the company maintains an online shop, raising concerns that distribution may extend considerably further afield.

Consumers who have already acquired these products are advised not to consume them.

Kimbland Distillery operates from Sanday, situated among Orkney’s Northern Isles, where it produces what it describes as “high-quality Scotch single malt whisky” using small-batch methods.

The distillery utilises locally sourced Orkney Bere Barley and specially cultivated yeast, combining traditional farming techniques with modern monitoring equipment throughout its brewing and distillation operations.

The safety warning regarding Kimbland Distillery Ltd comes just days after Britons were told not to drink a festive tipple that may cause rashes, vomiting and abdominal pain.

As confirmed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Vault City Brewing has urgently recalled its Mince Pie Pastry Sour beer after discovering undeclared milk.

The safety watchdog warned that this makes the product “a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents”.

Meanwhile, fans of the popular amaretto drink Disaronno have been urged to heed a critical warning after the manufacturers discovered some bottles may contain “micro-fragments of glass”.

Customers who have purchased affected batches must refrain from drinking the liqueur and instead return it to the retailer where it was bought.
