Gerwyn Price opens up on dramatic weight loss transformation after abuse

GERWYN PRICE has opened up on his dramatic weight loss before arriving at Ally Pally – a transformation his family love but which has angered the social media trolls.

The Iceman, who plays Czech qualifier Adam Gawlas on Tuesday evening, is already one of the fittest men on the circuit, having come from a rugby union and league background.

Price has dramatically changed his body and impressively so

But earlier this summer, he felt he had piled on too much timber and decided to shed some pounds.

In total, he has lost THREE STONE and he looks so much better for it, especially when many of his rivals have big beer bellies.

Yet last month he posted an image of himself topless in the gym, showing off his abs, because some people online had slammed him for slimming down too quickly.

Price, 40, said: “I’m not strict in what I eat, but I try and eat healthily at the right times.

“I try and not eat at the wrong times. I still eat what I want, but less of it.

“If I want to have something that’s not so healthy, then I have it earlier in the day rather than late at night.

“So, you don’t go to bed on it. It can have a different effect on your body.

“I’ve seen videos on my daughter’s phone or on the apps, even 12-18 months ago.

“At the time you wouldn’t think it, I didn’t think it, and my wife was like, oh, no, no, you’re fine – because I was just like, I need to get back in the gym.

“And then you look back and you’re like, yeah, I was holding a couple of pounds.

“Now, when you lose a bit of weight, people can be like, oh, no, he looks too thin and this and that and the other!

“You can’t win, can you? But at the end of the day, it’s not about what anybody else thinks.

“As long as you’re comfortable and you feel good in yourself, which I do, then I’m okay.”

“When I started, I was around 16-and-a-half stone, which is about 104kg, and I am down to like 85kg now – so I’ve lost 20 kilos. Almost three stone.”

Price – who won the world title in 2021 in an empty room due to Covid restrictions – is among a new breed of players that are slim and take fitness seriously.

The Welshman, who could meet Luke Littler in the quarter-finals, said: “I wouldn’t say you have to be an athlete.

“But it’s obviously in your own interests and it benefits you if you aren’t overweight.

“Or if you’re in a bit better shape, especially when it gets to the bigger tournaments where it’s longer formats.

“Sometimes even in the European events on a Sunday when you’re playing three or four games all day, it can definitely help.

“I’ve done it for myself to get in the best physical shape and mentality as well. Obviously, it makes it a bit easier when you’re not tired.

“If I put a stamp and a mark on it to try and change the shape of the sport as in physique-wise, then I’m happy, but I’m sure there’s a lot of other boys that have been doing it as well.”

Away from darts, Price is big into his properties and has bought 185 acres of land, 100 of which are woodland, where he is going to renovate a farmhouse, which has not been used for 30 years.

The No.9 seed said: “I’d never be a full-on farmer as I just haven’t got the time for it. I’d lease out most because it’s quite a big farm.

“I’ve got a lot of plans I want to do with it over the next couple of years and when I retire, when I’m 50, I’ll sit back, I might be a farmer then.

“One of my daughters has already planned to have cats and dogs, mini pigs and bits and pieces, but definitely some chickens.”
