Decorator shares tips to weatherproof Christmas lights as atmospheric river batters PNW

For many, December marks the beginning of getting into the Christmas spirit. But you may want to hold off another week before hanging up any outdoor decorations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch and wind advisory across parts of Oregon and Washington.

Ted Brockwood, who has been decorating his house on Peacock Lane for the past 23 years, says he’s seen it all.

“We’ve had the lights come off the house in a windstorm. The rain’s done a number in the past. So, we try to like get everything laid out, which is why you have all these weird sticks everywhere. And then we put it away if we know bad weather is coming. But once the lights are on, there’s really nothing you can do,” Brockwood said.

He also recommended using commercial-grade lights and plug end protectors, so the weather doesn’t put a “damper” on your holiday.

Peacock Lane launches its neighborhood light show on Dec. 15.
