PWHL Game 5 Hub: Charge @ Goldeneyes

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Ottawa Charge in action – the PWHL just concluded a December International Break and games resume today. The dead-last Charge will look to cut into their early standings deficit on the road, in their second matchup against the Vancouver Goldeneyes (Ottawa won their first on November 26th, 5-1). As expansion franchises which were considered by many to get a sweetheart deal from the league, it’s a bit surprising to see Vancouver and Seattle rounding out the bottom three.
We’ll update the lines when they’re posted, but for now, here’s how the Charge lined up against Toronto in their last game:

Game Notes:
- As one of the older, more established veterans in the league, Brianne Jenner was passed on by Vancouver and Seattle in the expansion draft in favour of younger potentially longer-term options – and this has benefitted the Charge early on. The captain leads the squad with 5 points in 4 games, and this is enough to share the lead in a league that’s dominated by goaltending (Linus Ullmark dreams about the .922 Gwyneth Philips currently has, and that mark is only 9th out of 12 PWHL goalies).
- In less positive news, alternate captain Emily Clark, who was Ottawa’s most productive forward in last year’s playoff, is pointless through the first 4 games. It’s way too early to project a down year for her, however.
- The Goldeneyes were last seen firing several rounds into the New York Sirens on the 6th of December, getting a 4-0 shutout in the process. Leading them offensively has been Abby Boreen, who was plucked out of Montreal in expansion. With 4 points in 5 games so far, she’s on pace to nearly double last season’s production.
- Puck drop is set for 10:00 pm EST tonight, and on top of the usual live streaming on the PWHL’s site and YouTube channel, the game is also available on an Amazon Prime broadcast.
