Taylor Swift’s Super Bowl Streak Is Over

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Los Angeles Chargers, officially dashing their hopes of making it to the playoffs. This is obviously a huge disappointment for Chiefs fans — but also for Swifties, who are suffering a loss as well: that of getting to see Taylor Swift at her third Super Bowl.

Since she started dating Travis Kelce — so, for the past couple seasons of football — Swift has been a Super Bowl fixture. Last year, she showed up in bedazzled jean shorts and an oversize blazer and hung out looking nervous with Ice Spice and all three Haim sisters during the game. (She was right; the Chiefs lost.) The year before that was a big one for Swift fans — the singer, capping off her rookie season as a WAG, cheered Kelce on to his third Super Bowl victory, and we all got to watch her run onto the field and smooch him like the end of a John Hughes movie.

So could Swift feasibly show up to watch whichever non-Chiefs teams get to the Super Bowl? Sure, but chances are she would not bring along her bedazzled WAG jackets and brigade of emotional-support celebs. No Swift this year likely means the Super Bowl is losing a huge demographic; when she started showing up at games two years ago, the NFL saw a massive increase in female viewers as a result, and Kelce’s jersey sales skyrocketed.

It also means Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Sophie Turner, Sabrina Carpenter, and all the rest of Swift’s many celebrity pals may be out of luck if they’re looking for seats in the VIP box. Maybe Swift can have them all over for an at-home viewing party instead? I bet she makes a killer seven-layer bean dip.
