Dolphins won’t start Zach Wilson despite benching Tua Tagovailoa

Zach Wilson left the Denver Broncos during free agency this spring to sign a one-year, $6 million deal with the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos later replaced him by signing Sam Ehlinger to a one-year contract worth around $1.17 million.

After leaving Denver, Wilson said he had hopes of becoming a starter again in the NFL. He had a clearer path to that scenario in Miami as the QB2 behind Tua Tagovailoa (opposed to a QB3 role behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham).

Now, two and a half months into the season, the Dolphins have benched Tagovailoa after being eliminated from playoff contention with a 6-8 record. Unfortunately for Wilson, though, he is not the new QB1 in Miami.

Instead, the Dolphins are turning to rookie Quinn Ewers, according to multiple reports. Miami used a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL draft to select Ewers, a 22-year-old QB out of Texas. He now gets the nod over a 26-year-old Wilson, who will presumably remain QB2 if Tagovailoa has been demoted to an inactive role.

Wilson got a raise after leaving the Broncos, but it appears he’ll have to wait for a potential starting role. Wilson is scheduled to become a free agent again in 2026.
