Calgary fire crews investigate fire at downtown business

Crews were on scene in downtown Calgary Wednesday after a fire at a business broke out around 5 a.m.

Alex Kwan with the Calgary Fire Department says crews were called to 10 Avenue and 2 Street SW around for reports of a structure fire.

The area is home to several popular bars and restaurants, including Greta and Salt & Brick.

No occupants were inside at the time.

When firefighters got to the scene, they reported some visible flames and high volumes of smoke.

Crews worked to make sure they completely extinguished the fire, Kwan adds.

“So there’s some difficult to access spaces within the building and just based on the smoke volume, it seems like there’s a smoldering fire,” he said.

A fire investigator is on scene working to figure the cause of the blaze.

The fire department says smoke spread to neighbouring businesses. The construction site at the building next door wasn’t impacted and workers were able to resume work with minimal impacts.

Mechanical fans were use to clear the smoke from the buildings.

Area roads were closed for several hours to allow for investigation and clean-up, but have since reopened.
