It’s not good news for Coronation Street fans tonight as their Wednesday trip to Weatherfield has been cancelled.

The beloved ITV soap drama – that recently turned 65 – typically graces our screens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX. This week, the soap aired a harrowing special episode focused on the abuse that Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) is suffering at the hands of partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).

However, tonight’s episode (December 17) of the show has been bumped off the schedule to make way for coverage of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The football match between champions Newcastle United and Fulham takes centre stage on ITV1 at 7:30pm and finishes at 10:40pm, clashing with Coronation Street’s usual start time of 8pm.

However, what would have been Wednesday’s Corrie episode actually aired on Tuesday (December 16) due to the schedule shake-up. So fans are able to catch up on ITVX if they missed it.

The soap will return on Friday (December 19) for its usual hour-long episode, starting at 8pm and finishing at around 9pm. The preview for the instalment reads: “Will celebrates his 16th birthday in a hotel room with Megan, Sally clashes with Joanie over a schedule conflict, and Carl panics that Abi might see an incriminating message from James.”

Meanwhile, reacting to the shake-up, on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person fumed: “F*cking football again. Apparently people who prefer football to corrie and don’t have a digital recorder are more important to ITV than regular loyal corrie viewers.”

Another disgruntled viewer penned: “It bloody annoys me.” Echoing their thoughts, a third chimed in and declared: “ITV should have a sports channel!” Someone else said: “Bloody footie again I suppose.”

It’s been a dramatic time on the cobbles this week as the soap aired a special episode focused on Todd and Theo – who has been abusing boyfriend Todd.

As the soap delves into domestic abuse within a same-sex relationship, the special episode was presented through various recording devices including Todd’s secret camera, CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, video doorbell captures and police body-worn cameras.

Talking about being asked to direct this first of its kind episode, Coronation Street Director Matt Hilton revealed: “It felt like a really bold idea to show it in this intimate and voyeuristic way that I’d never seen done before.

“And as a fan of the true crime genre I could see how it could work if we did it right, something that would be intriguing for the viewer and make them feel uncomfortable in watching it all take place.”
