As of just after 12:20 p.m., Calgary Police Service reported additional major roadway impacts, noting on social media that northbound Deerfoot Trail at Stoney Trail is closed.

Airdrie RCMP are advising drivers to avoid all roadways within their policing area, including the City of Airdrie, Rocky View County, Crossfield, Beiseker and surrounding rural areas.

“Driving conditions are treacherous with zero visibility,” police said, adding officers are responding to numerous collisions. “Please stay home so everyone, including all first responders, are safe.”

The closures and advisories come as RCMP across central Alberta report rapidly deteriorating conditions along the QEII corridor.

Didsbury RCMP said Highway 2 between Secondary Highways 581 and 582 is experiencing “zero visibility,” with “numerous vehicles in the ditches.” Police advised motorists to monitor Alberta 511 for current road conditions.

Olds RCMP said officers are responding to several reports of vehicle collisions and warned that travel is not recommended as conditions continue to deteriorate.

Environment Canada, in an update issued at 11:08 a.m. MST Wednesday, said poor visibility in blowing snow continues, with an impact level of moderate and forecast confidence high.

“The Highway 2 corridor between Calgary and Red Deer, the Highway 1 corridor east of Calgary and outlying, exposed areas within Calgary city limits are most likely to be impacted,” the agency said. “Conditions will improve this evening.”

Environment Canada advised motorists to postpone non-essential travel and, if driving, to turn on lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance. The advisory is in effect for Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield.
