‘Very surprising’: Major Aussie retailer makes shock store closures amid Christmas rush

David Jones has announced shock store closures amid a busy Christmas rush – leaving shoppers “very sad”.
The major retail store serving Australians since 1838 confirmed it will permanently close two popular New South Wales stores.
In Sydney’s northwest, the David Jones store in Castle Towers will close its doors next month.
“After 34 years of serving our community, our David Jones Castle Towers store will be closing on Sunday January 18, 2026,” a sign at the store read.
“The team would like to thank all our wonderful customers for your support.
“We invite you to visit your closest stores – David Jones Parramatta, Hornsby or Chatswood Chase.”
And on the Central Coast, the popular Tuggerah store will close on January 12.
“We’re sad to announce that we’ll be closing the doors of our Tuggerah store,” the retailer said.
“On behalf of all of us at David Jones, we want to thank you for being a loyal customer over the past 30 years.”
Tuggerah residents’ closest David Jones will be one of the Kotara, Green Hills or Hornsby locations after the closure comes into effect.
Shoppers threw their support behind the world’s “longest continuously operating department store” after hearing of the shock closures.
“Wow. Back in 1970’s when that site (Castle Towers) was a block of vacant land there was a sign saying David Jones is coming. Very sad about them,” one said.
“That’s very very surprising I must say,” another added.
“So sad all the good old stores are closing in favour of the cheaper shops now,” a third said.
While a fourth claimed: “Really sad for them as they’ve been there 30 years? Two originals will retire that started when the store opened and they closed because centre management told them to upgrade or get out. There was nothing wrong with the store.”
The premium retailer currently has 43 stores – including its first international store in Wellington, New Zealand.
David Jones also has two boutique format stores at Barangaroo, Sydney and James Street, Brisbane.
In August 2014, the retailer was purchased by South African based company, Woolworths Holdings Limited.
