Steve Smith in doubt for Test, Cummins reveals reason behind Khawaja axing

Alex Carey’s brilliant ton and an impressive return from Usman Khawaja led Australia to 8/326 at stumps after an emotional day one of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide.

Tears flowed in the crowd after hometown hero Carey reached three figures and immediately paid tribute to his father Gordon, who died in September after a battle with leukaemia.

Australia was rocked before play by the huge news Steve Smith would miss the Test match after battling “vestibular” issues.

There was then a stirring tribute to the victims of the Bondi Beach massacre, with John Williamson singing True Blue and players from both teams wearing black armbands and observing a minute of silence.

Once the action got underway, the home side lost regular wickets but will still have a chance to build on a healthy first innings when the match resumes on day two.

It was a more competitive day for the tourists, with Jofra Archer taking three wickets in England’s bid to become just the second side in history to win an Ashes series after being 2-0 down.

The only time it has ever happened before was by Don Bradman’s Australia in 1936.

England must win in Adelaide to keep the series alive.
