Taylor Sheridan’s Next Leading Man to Play Controversial 90s Sports Icon After Replacing Jonathan Majors

The star of Taylor Sheridan’s next big movie has landed the role of the most controversial sports figure of the 1990s. News broke over the weekend that LaKeith Stanfield, who will star alongside Sam Claflin in Sheridan’s F.A.S.T., has been tapped to play former Pistons and Bulls professional basketball player Dennis Rodman in a new sports biopic titled 48 Hours in Vegas. Stanfield replaces Jonathan Majors, who was the first name attached to play Rodman before being removed from the role in 2023. It remains unclear when the film will begin production, and Lionsgate has yet to announce a release window.
48 Hours in Vegas will tell the story of Dennis Rodman’s detour to Las Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals. Details about this incident became popular during Netflix’s documentary on the Bulls, The Last Dance, back in 2020. Rodman asked his teammate, Michael Jordan, and head coach Phil Jackson for a vacation to take some time away, an idea that Jordan was skeptical of from the tip. However, Phil Jackson, being the enigmatic, understanding figure that he is, let Rodman travel to Vegas. He, of course, overextended his leave of absence, leaving Jordan to go fetch him from a hotel room in Sin City.
LaKeith Stanfield was nominated for an Oscar in 2021 for his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah, the R-rated thriller that even saw Daniel Kaluuya win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Stanfield also exploded in popularity a few years ago thanks to his role in Knives Out, and he recently teamed up with Mark Wahlberg for their record-breaking Prime Video original hit, Play Dirty.
Who Else Stars in Taylor Sheridan’s Next Action Movie?
In addition to Stanfield and Clafin, Jason Clarke and Juliana Canfield are also attached to star in F.A.S.T., which is due in theaters on April 23, 2027. Brandon Sklenar, who worked with Sheridan on both seasons of 1923, was the first name reported to star in the project. During an interview with Collider earlier this year, Claflin admitted that working on the project is demanding but satisfying. Sheridan wrote the script for F.A.S.T., which is said to be a spiritual successor to Sicario, but Ben Richardson is directing the film. Sheridan and Richardson have worked together on several projects over the years.
