Fortnite Winterfest release date and downtime confirmed but it’s bad news for Xbox fans

Just when you thought we were done with Fortnite updates in 2025, developer Epic Games is back with one final download and period of server downtime before finishing up for Christmas.

Fortnite update 39.11 has been officially announced for consoles, PC and mobile, complete with a December 18 release date.

Needless to say, the update will also coincide with a period of server downtime, which means no Fortnite in any form for upwards of a couple of hours. There’s more bad news for Xbox fans, after Epic Games announced that the update file size will be even bigger on Microsoft’s platform. If you’re running low on space, then you might need to delete a game or two in order to accommodate the new Fortnite update.

On the plus side, when the game does come back online, fans will be able to take part in the 2025 Winterfest event.

Fortnite servers will be taken offline in full at 9am GMT UK time, although matchmaking will be disabled 30 minutes prior at 8.30am GMT.

The news was announced on the Fortnite X page, alongside confirmation that the Winterfest will follow.

“Winterfest blows into the Golden Coast!” reads an Epic Games tweet. “Downtime for v39.11 begins at 4 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand.”

In a follow-up tweet, Epic confirmed the expanded file size for Xbox users: “Please note that the update on Xbox devices may be larger than usual.”

The official server status page lists downtime for 90 minutes, which means the game should be back online at 10.30am GMT in the UK.

In terms of what fans can expect, Fortnite update 39.11 will bring a variety of changes to the map, such as frost and snow.

As you can see from the teaser above, the Cabin will also make a return, alongside presents for players to open.

The teaser also gives fans a microscopic look at some of the new skins coming to Fortnite for Winterfest. This includes Snow Hatsune Miku and Santa Sabrina Carpenter.

Other crossovers include new Bleach skins, as well as Spongebob and Patrick as new Sidekicks.

Baby Groot is also tipped to join Fortnite as a Sidekick, alongside Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future.

Outside of the festive-themed additions, fans can also look forward to the launch 5-person Battle Royale Squads.
