Wild weekend of ‘severe’ heat, storms loom

Hot weather is set to sizzle parts of the country this weekend with severe heatwave and fire danger warnings in place, while other parts will experience thunderstorms and strong winds.
Next week the Northern Territory is even expecting a monsoon over Christmas causing drenching rain and the threat of flood.
According to the BOM, here’s a breakdown of the forecast for each state from today until Sunday.
ACT
The mercury will tip to the mid to high 30 range and overnight temperatures could reach to the mid to high teens as a severe heatwave warning is placed for the entire capital.
On Saturday, cooler conditions are expected, however, heatwave conditions are expected to peak at the end of the week.
Locations likely to be impacted include: Canberra, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Woden Valley.
NSW
An extreme heatwave warning has been placed for the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, South Coast and Snowy Mountains.
While a severe heatwave warning is set for the Northern Rivers, Hunter, Northern Tablelands, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes and Riverina.
Inland and northern districts of the state can expect temperature in the high 30s to low 40s, and at night, the temperature will remain hot, potentially hitting mid 20s.
The south of NSW will see temperatures hit between high 20s to high 30s.
Locations likely to be impacted include Armidale, Camden, Campbelltown, Grafton, Goulburn, Hornsby, Lismore, Liverpool, Orange and Richmond.
VIC
A severe heatwave warning is in place for Northern Country, North East, East Gippsland, West and South Gippsland and North Central.
Severe heatwave conditions are expected to peak on Thursday and Friday before easing into the weekend as winds extend across the state.
Temperatures will hit between the mid 30s to the low 40s in the north of Victoria. On Thursday night, temperatures will reach up to the mid twenties.
Locations likely to be impacted include Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Bright, Corryong, Mansfield, Mallacoota, Omeo, Shepparton, Seymour and Wangaratta.
There is also an extreme fire danger forecasted in Wimmera on Thursday.
QLD
A severe heatwave warning for is in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt areas.
The severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist through until mid next week, reaching a peak over the weekend and early parts of next week.
Temperatures are likely to hit between the high 30s to low 40s and overnight minimum temperatures will be warm.
Locations likely to be impacted include Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe.
WA
Showers and gusty thunderstorms as well as light showers are expected across different parts of the state over the weekend.
Strong wind warnings have been placed for Friday in the following areas: Perth Local Waters, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast and Leeuwin Coast.
SA
Extreme fire danger is expected across much of southern South Australia on Thursday.
The extreme fire danger is forecasted in the following fire weather districts: Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East.
Showers and possible thunderstorms are also forecasted for parts of state over the weekend.
TAS
Showers are developing across the state with possibilities of thunderstorms in other parts.
On Thursday there are strong wind warnings in the following areas: South West Coast and Central West Coast.
On Friday, there is a strong wind warning for the following areas: Far North West Coast, Central North Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, South West Coast and Central West Coast.
NT
A severe isolated thunderstorm warning which are likely to produce damaging wind gusts is currently in place for the next several hours.
Locations which may be affected include Borroloola, Ngukurr, Bulman, Numbulwar, McArthur River and Mainoru.
While a severe weather warning is in place for heavy rain on Thursday and Friday bringing showers and thunderstorms.
