Company Owned By Coolmore Offered Guilty Plea To Four Charges In Case Involving Removal Of Hedgerows

A company owned by Coolmore has offered a guilty plea to four charges in a case where the Department of Agriculture prosecuted the company for removing hedgerows on a farm. The company removed over 1150 meters of historic hedgerows in breach of EU environmental laws. The case was before Clonmel Circuit court yesterday and Judge Deirdre Browne adjourned the case for sentencing until March 6th next year.
The farm at Ballygerald east near Cashel was purchased by JP Magnier and Kate Wachman, children of John Magnier in 2022. The Department began their investigation after a complaint was made by Alan Moore from Hedgerows Ireland. Under the current law anyone seeking to remove over 500 m of hedgerow or seeking to create fields of a size in excess of five hectares must seek Departmental clarification as to whether an Environmental screening report is required. The Company Shem Drowne Ltd could face a fine of €250,000 for each offence.
