A pupil has tragically died after police and ambulance crews were called to a school this morning following reports of a medical emergency on the premises.
Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance Service, arrived at St Wilfrid’s RC College shortly after 9:15 am. The school has since confirmed that the significant emergency response was due to a medical incident involving an individual on the site.
Northumbria Police and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service remained at the scene throughout the morning to provide assistance, ChronicleLive reports.
There was restricted access to the immediate area while the incident was being managed.
In a statement, St Wilfrid’s RC College headteacher Catherine Lennox said:” As you may already be aware, we have had a medical episode in school this morning.
“Sadly the student involved has passed away. Our entire school community is deeply saddened, and we will continue to come together to support one another at this incredibly difficult time.
“Our school community joins us in sending thoughts and prayers to the family and those affected.
“We have taken the difficult decision to close the school for the rest of the day. We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time. If parents have any concerns about pupils going home please contact us via the usual channels for support.
“Please respect the family’s privacy at this time and ask that you hold them in your thoughts and prayers as they endure this profound loss.
“We will updated families later today on arrangements for tomorrow. Thank you for your continued support.”
