Fatalities reported after plane crashes at North Carolina airport

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – A plane crash at an airport in North Carolina has resulted in multiple deaths, the Iredell County sheriff confirmed.
Officials said Thursday a Cessna C550 crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County at about 10:15 a.m.
Flight tracking records showed a Cessna 550 that took off from Statesville Regional Airport at 10:06 a.m.

Multiple fatalities were reported, but the exact number remained unknown.
The Federal Aviation Administration told CBS News that six people were aboard the plane. It was not immediately clear whether there were any survivors.
Business records show the plane is owned by a private North Carolina company affiliated with retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. It was not clear if he was on the plane.

According to the city of Statesville’s website, the airport is city-owned and provides corporate aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.
The airport is not far from the interchange of Interstates 77 and 40 and is about 10 minutes from downtown Statesville.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
Officials said the airport is closed until further notice because of debris caused by the crash.
