CFAC passes IRA fee increase recommendation; awaits action by SDSU President

On Dec. 12, the Campus Fee Advisory Committee voted to send a recommendation to SDSU President Adela de la Torre regarding a proposed increase to the Instructionally Related Activity Fee. The committee voted 15-2 on the final recommendation and will wait to hear back from de la Torre.
The resolution proposes a lower increase than the previously proposed 45%, which would have raised the fee from $580 per year to $840 per year, totaling approximately $10.2 million for intercollegiate athletics and sports clubs.
The IRA fee has been steadily increasing by around 3-4% each academic year, but this is the first time since 2009 that the fee has been increased due to SDSU a.
Instead, the CFAC recommends an incremental increase over four years by $60 a semester during the 2026-2028 academic years, $90 for the 2028-29 academic year and $120 in the 2029-30 academic year.
This equates to a 20.7% increase in the first two years, a 31% increase in the third year, and a final 41.1% increase in its fourth year of implementation.
If de la Torre implements the CFAC’s recommendation, 3% will be allocated for students unable to pay the IRA, 6% will be allocated to sports clubs, 1.7% will be allocated to Adapted Athletics, 2% will be allocated to Aztec Student Media (including The Daily Aztec) and 2% to the Main IRA in the final year of the fee implementation.
The rest of the money would be allocated to intercollegiate athletics for priorities including “enhancements to student spirit, ongoing repairs and maintenance of shared facilities, ‘internships and practicums’ and student-athlete well being,” according to SDSU Athletics’ original fee increase presentation.
The recommendation also calls for “an agreement outlining the use of shared facilities between intercollegiate athletics and other campus users, maintaining current use.”
Such shared facilities include turf fields PG610 and PG620, Peterson Gym, the Tennis Center, Sports Deck and the Fowler Athletic Center.
SDSU Athletics cited a correlation between the success and revenue of the Athletics Department to an increase in student applications as a key reason for the increase.
Once a final determination has been made on the increase by de la Torre, it will be reported back to the Campus Fee Advisory Committee. There is currently no publicly available deadline for de la Torre’s response.
