Christmas weather update: Met Éireann gives verdict on chance of storms over festive period

The forecast comes as Christmas week is expected to bring more settled conditions across the country.
Met Éireann meteorologist Ailís Hankinson told the Irish Independent there are no storms on the way for the festive period. “We’re unlikely to see any storms at the moment,” she said.
However, Ms Hankinson emphasised that the details are still uncertain for Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and St Stephen’s Day, adding that it might get a bit cooler, too.
“Well, at the moment, our details still aren’t exactly clear, because we are still a week out from Christmas,” she said.
“But it does look like all our models are converging on more settled, drier conditions building for the Christmas week.
“So it will definitely be drier than of late. Now, with that, we could see some cooler air as well, but it’s hard to tell at this stage exactly how cold it’s going to get.
“So we could see some frost and perhaps some fog at times, too. But as I said, the details are a little bit unclear as we are a week or so out.”

Meanwhile, the mobile Atlantic regime will continue to bring unsettled and mixed conditions for the rest of the week across the country.
There will be a mixture of further spells of rain, showers and sunny spells in store, before a stormy weekend ahead.
Meteorologist Holly O’Neill said: “The weekend will see a continuation of unsettled conditions as we remain in this mobile Atlantic regime, with further outbreaks of rain and drizzle as well as longer spells of rain with isolated hail and thunderstorms likely.
“Temperatures will also be noticeably cooler, too.”
However, the national forecaster said more settled and drier but cooler weather will move into next week and towards Christmas.
Next week will start with further spells of rain and showers on Monday.
Temperatures will range between 5C and 9C on Monday, with only light breezes.
“While the detail continues to be uncertain later into the next week, current indications are for overall drier and more settled conditions to develop,” Met Éireann added.
