Like Charlotte Church, I won’t be shaving my legs for party season

No one has, thankfully, ever commented on my hairy pins other than one friend who goes in for the full body laser treatment, and who I once shared a room with on a girl’s weekend.
When she saw me getting changed once and clocked my hairy legs, she raised a perfectly laminated eyebrow and told me I was “very brave”.
Brave? No one will be looking when I’m dancing in the dark anyway.
Soft, not stubbled
I, like Church, am somewhat paradoxical when it comes to my beauty standards. I have a pedicure every few months and make sure my toenails are always painted. I typically smooth leg hairs down with a bit of baby oil or moisturiser – downy, soft hairs can easily be tamed with a slick of a product like Fur Oil (the American beauty brand Fur was founded to create softening and hydrating oils for women’s body hair).
Skincare expert Dr Ed Robinson advises that hairy legs can still look “‘styled’ for party season”.
“Hydration is everything,” he says. “When skin is dry, hair can look more obvious because the skin looks dull and flaky. A good moisturiser (or a light body oil over moisturiser) makes legs look smoother and can make hair appear softer and less ‘stubbly’.”
Notes on cleanliness
“Leg hair doesn’t make you ‘less hygienic’, it’s simply hair,” Robinson says. “If you’re comfortable leaving it, the most important thing in winter is skin barrier support: gentle cleansing, consistent moisturising, and avoiding over-exfoliation.”
Pick the right tights
I’d say that hairs poking through tights is a perfectly acceptable look. Tights, Robinson suggests should be chosen “strategically. Sheer tights can emphasise texture on dry skin; semi-opaque/opaque often looks smoother and more ‘even’ in winter.”
