Plunging temps could lead to tricky morning commute, forecasters say

LANSING — Plunging temperatures could lead to slippery roads during the morning commute on Friday, Dec. 19, forecasters said.
Temperatures were expected to fall below freezing around midnight on Thursday, Dec. 19, in the Lansing area, and that could turn any moisture on the roads into ice, the National Weather Service said.
Gusty winds out of the west, possibly reaching 30 to 40 mph, could help dry the roads and lessen the threat of icy conditions, said Scott Thomas, a forecaster for the weather service in Grand Rapids. But ice-covered or waterlogged gravel roads could become especially tricky to drive on, he said.
In any case, drivers should allow for extra travel time on Friday morning, the weather service said.
Snow was in the forecast for Friday, especially near Lake Michigan. The Lansing region was espected to get less than an inch.
Temperatures were expected to fluctuate over the next few days, with highs in the mid-20s on Friday, high 30s on Saturday, Dec. 20 and mid-20s on Sunday, Dec. 21.
