‘90s series star seen ahead of ‘Today’ interview about stage 3 cancer fight

James Van Der Beek’s stage 3 colorectal cancer fight will be documented in an upcoming interview on the “Today” show.

“Today” host Craig Melvin posted pictures with the “Dawson Creek” star on Instagram.

“Spent the day in TX on James Van Der Beek’s ranch,” the NBC broadcaster captioned.

“Overcast and dreary outside but James is quite the ray of positivity these days. It was refreshing and inspiring,” Melvin added in the caption before sharing a glimpse of his and Van Der Beek’s conversation. “We talked about where he is on his journey, the importance of cancer screenings, and how he’s finding joy in family and faith.”

The pre-taped interview with the 48-year-old actor will air Friday, Dec. 19.

Van Der Beek, known for his role in “Varsity Blues,” revealed in November of 2024 was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer.

“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he told PEOPLE at the time. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

According to the American Cancer Society’s website, colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum. “These cancers can also be called colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where they start,” the website says. “Colon cancer and rectal cancer are often grouped together because they have many features in common.” Van Der Beek is best known for playing Dawson Leery on The WB’s popular 1990s/2000s teen drama series “Dawson’s Creek” on which he costarred with Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson.On the heels of his “Dawson’s Creek” fame and popularity, he landed several film roles including 1998’s “Varsity Blues” in which his played small-town high school football star quarterback Jonathan “Mox” Moxon.
