This German-language film follows a soldier during World War One and is based on the internationally renowned novel by Erich Maria Remarque. Following Hollywood remakings of the book, this was the first German adaptation and won four Oscars, including Best International Feature Film.

Society Of The Snow (2023)
This Oscar-nominated, Spanish-language film tells a story twice told before, memorably in 1993 movie, Alive. This survival thriller is said to be a more accurate account of the now-famous real-life disaster, which saw a rugby team’s plane crash in the Andes and them battle to stay alive in the hope of rescue.

The Platform (2019)
The themes explored in this violent Spanish thriller are as dark as the setting. A man wakes to find himself in a vertical prison where a platform containing a finite amount of food travels from top to bottom – pitting the floors against each other in a grim societal experiment. This Italian action thriller sees an ex-criminal come out of hiding alongside his daughter to enact revenge. It’s giving Jason Statham crossed with Liam Neeson in Taken – which is to say, you’re in for a perfect Friday night thrill.

Brick (2025)
A thriller with a premise designed to terrify you from the off, this German film finds a couple opening their front door to find that the entire building is completely sealed off by bricks. As the apartment building pulls together to try and solve the mystery, the question swings between ‘Can they escape’ and ‘Wtf is going on?’ Sure to keep you on your toes for a couple of hours, the film was number one in 36 countries.

A twist on the Strangers On A Train trope, this stylish Dutch thriller has a whipsmart premise. Two friends go away on weekends together – using them as an alibi to their husbands, before actually splitting off and enjoying time to do whatever they please. But when one of the women is killed, it all starts to unravel.
