Ariana Grande Wore Bob Mackie For SNL Promo

Ariana Grande will be hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, and rather than waiting for the broadcast to serve a fashion moment, she delivered one early in the promo alongside Cher and Bowen Yang.

When Law Roach is involved, a look rarely arrives without context, and this one comes with a clear nod to television and fashion history. The celebrity stylist shared on Instagram that the actress-singer wore a vintage Bob Mackie multi-colour silk-crepe chevron-striped halter-neck gown, complete with a matching shawl, sourced from Julien’s Auctions. The piece was originally worn by Carol Burnett during the opening monologue of The Carol Burnett Show in March 1973, grounding the moment firmly in classic American TV culture.

The Cher and Bob Mackie connection adds another layer to the story, given their long-standing creative partnership and shared legacy of stage dressing that blends glamour with performance. It’s a thoughtful alignment that makes the promo feel rooted in entertainment history rather than simply styled for effect.

As for the dress itself, it’s refreshing to see Ariana step away from pink and into a richer, warmer colour palette, as well as a silhouette that moves beyond fairytale references. That aesthetic served its purpose beautifully during the Wicked press run, but this feels like a welcome shift. While awards season will undoubtedly pull her back into Glinda mode at times, this look signals that Ariana’s style narrative has room to stretch beyond that bubble.

Stylist: Law Roach.
