Why the Late Late Show isn’t on this week, and what’s replacing it

RTÉ have confirmed that the Late Late Show won’t be on tonight, but has lined up a Christmas classic in its place.

Patrick Kielty hosted the show’s Christmas special just one week after the Late Late Toy Show last Friday, which saw Shane Lowry make up for his lack of appearance on the Toy Show by playing the pitch and potty with golf fan and Toy Show star Declan.

However, those thinking that they’d be able to watch the show on Friday night may be left disappointed, as Patrick Kielty confirmed that they’ll be off the air until New Year’s Eve.

While some may have thought (either excitedly or otherwise) that the lack of Late Late meant that the show was at death’s door, they’ll either be delighted or disappointed to find out that they’ll be back in just two weeks.

‘We will be back on New Year’s Eve with a very special countdown show,’ Patrick told viewers and the audience at the end of last week’s Christmas special. ‘From me and from all of us here, have a great one. This has been The Late Late Show, I have been Patrick Kielty, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.’

If you’re looking to celebrate the fact that the Late Late isn’t on this Friday, however, you might once again be delighted or disappointed to find out that its replacement will be the Mrs Brown’s Boys New Year’s special — which will see the Brown family matriarch turn her spare room into a bed and breakfast, unaware that there’s a criminal on the loose in Finglas.

RTÉ 2 have a much better showing at 9.30, however, with Steven Spielberg’s JAWS set to air, while if you really want to be watching a chat show, BBC One has a bumper Graham Norton Show on Friday night, with an Irish twist (that isn’t the host) when Jessie Buckley joins Graham on the couch alongside Jack Black, Paul Rudd and comedian Michelle de Swarte.

It was a sweet Late Late Show on Friday night, with viewers being left in floods of tears following an adorable family reunion between a 98-year-old great-great-grandmother who got to meet her great-great-grandchild for the first time on the show.

Host Patrick Kielty strolled nonchalantly to the front row of the festive Late Late Show audience, and, to the surprise of one special audience member, invited 98-year-old Mary to take a seat on a big comfy armchair on stage.

He then spoke briefly about her extended family and the possibility of seeing them for Christmas before the curtains opened, and Mary was shocked to see her grandson Ross, his wife Bella and their two children, Nico and the newest member of the family, baby Lara.

But the Christmas surprise didn’t stop there. Not only did Mary get to wrap her arms around her new granddaughter, but she was also taken totally by surprise by the arrival of all of her extended family – 13 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family all arrived out on stage to the astonishment of their gran Mary, with Patrick Kielty almost running out of breath announcing every one of them by name.
