Star Wars Has Officially Completed Its Second Movie In 6 Years With New BTS Photo

Star Wars: Starfighter, the second film in the franchise to be made since the end of the Skywalker Saga, has completed filming ahead of its May 2027 release, and director Shawn Levy just shared a behind-the-scenes photo to mark the big milestone.
With the Skywalker Saga complete, Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to expand the Star Wars franchise for the big screen, which includes The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Star Wars: Starfighter.
Levy took to Instagram to announce that filming has wrapped on Star Wars: Starfighter. He included a caption that said, “That’s a wrap! Headed into #Starfighter post-production like…” alongside a black-and-white photo of himself running on a wall.
The comments section of the post, which so far has over 7,000 likes, was filled with excited fans looking forward to Levy’s contribution to the Star Wars franchise. Take a look at the behind-the-scenes photo below:
Some fans in the comments section pointed out that Star Wars: Starfighter didn’t take very long to film. Production only just began in August 2025, and filming wrapped four months later. Matt Smith, who plays a villain in the movie, recently announced that he finished filming his scenes last week.
The Doctor Who alum appeared on a talk show to promote his new series, The Death of Bunny Munro. The hosts couldn’t help but remark on his hairstyle, which was closely shaved on the sides, with bangs that came out to a point in the middle of his forehead. During the interview, Smith expressed his excitement over appearing in Starfighter and couldn’t wait for fans to see the final product.
Star Wars movies have been far and few between in recent years. After the Skywalker Saga ended in 2019 with the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Disney shifted its focus to TV shows on Disney+, which included The Mandalorian, Andor, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.
The entertainment and media company is returning the franchise to movie theaters next year, with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22, 2026. Star Wars: Starfighter will follow a year later on May 28, 2027.
Along with Gosling and Smith, the Starfighter cast also includes Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
With a script by Jonathan Tropper, and Kathleen Kennedy producing alongside Levy, Starfighter will break new ground as the franchise tells post-Skywalker Saga stories on the big screen for the very first time.
There’s still a year and a half until Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters, enough time for the anticipation to build and for The Mandalorian and Grogu to keep the excitement alive within the fandom. The movie introduces a brand-new chapter for the Star Wars franchise, and Levy’s filming update marks a huge milestone that means post-production can now begin.
Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in theaters on Friday, May 28, 2027.
