VILLANOVA, PA – In BIG EAST women’s basketball action on Friday night, the Villanova Wildcats tallied their seventh straight win with a 72-55 victory over the visiting Seton Hall Pirates. With the win, Villanova improves to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Pirates fall to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.

Seton Hall led 11-5 late in the first quarter, when the Wildcats closed the period on a 7-2 run to lead 12-11 after 10 minutes of play. Three different Wildcats accounted for the seven points, including Dani Ceseretti and Jasmine Bascoe with lay-ups and freshman Brooke Bender with a three-point field goal.

Bascoe scored seven of Villanova’s 12 first quarter points.

The Wildcats led 20-18 midway through the second quarter and went on a 15-7 spurt to finish the period and lead 35-25 at halftime. All 15 Villanova points came via the three-ball with senior Ryanne Allen draining four consecutive triples in the run. Junior forward Brynn McCurry connected on the other three.

Allen led her team in the opening half with 15 points.

Villanova started the second half by scoring nine of the game’s first 11 points to open-up a 44-27 advantage. Seton Hall then responded by scoring six straight points to slice the Wildcat lead to 44-33 with 4:59 to play in the third stanza.

The Wildcats put the game away by finishing the quarter on a convincing 16-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 60-39 after three. Bender highlighted the stretch with two three-point field goals, while Bascoe and Allen had four points each.

Seton Hall would not get within 15 in the fourth quarter and Villanova would cruise to the victory.

Bascoe led all scorers in the win with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Allen had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range. McCurry registered a career-best eight assists and a career-high four steals.

Seton Hall was paced by Jada Eads with 12 points and Savannah Catalon who had 11 points.

For the game, Villanova was 30-of-68 from the floor (44.1%), 12-of-34 from three-point range (35.3%) and 0-for-2 from the foul line, while Seton Hall shot 37.9 percent from the

field (22-of-58), 33.3 percent from long distance (7-of-21) and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (4-of-8). Villanova owned a 41-36 advantage on the backboards.

Villanova returns to action on Monday afternoon when the St. John’s Red Storm visit the Finneran Pavilion. Game time is set for noon.
