ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three officers are in the hospital after police say they were shot responding to a domestic scene Friday night on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road.

What we know

RPD Chief David Smith briefed the media Saturday morning, saying officers responded to reports of a man breaking into the house of his ex-girlfriend, possibly with a gun, around 10:15 p.m. Officers tell us the caller, the woman’s current boyfriend, told police he had his legally-owned pistol on him at the time.

When officers got to the scene, they found the suspect on the side of the house — that’s when bullets started to fly.

Chief Smith says the suspect pulled out a gun and starting shooting at officers and the victim. RPD officers and the victim shot back, and the victim was shot multiple times.

The suspect ran from the scene, but an officer found them near Arnett Boulevard and Thurston Road. Again, the chief says the suspect immediately pulled out a gun and shot at the officer. That officer shot the suspect, and the suspect died at the scene.

News10NBC on the scene Friday night

News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke to neighbors at the scene who heard multiple rounds of shots ring out.

“I heard gunshots in motion,” said neighbor Kenneth Jackson. “Engines of a car and gunshots at the same time.”

Marsha Augustin, News10NBC: “What was your reaction when you heard that?”

Jackson: “What is going on? I turn my cameras on, see if I could see anything this way, and all I saw was maybe 30 police cars going this way down Alberta. It was a pretty hectic scene.”

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans joined Chief Smith for the initial media update on Friday night.

“This is always our biggest nightmare,” said Evans. “During this time of the year, these type of incidents, when they happen, right now all we ask everyone to pray for these officers as they go through this. And also please, we will have more information tomorrow.”

This is a developing story, and will be updated as we learn more.
