Aweek and a half ago, as an early morning Rex passenger flight from Adelaide Airport to Broken Hill prepared to take off, the ageing Saab 340 turboprop plane came to a screeching halt and passengers began to shout “fire!”

The left engine was burning and smoke quickly filled the cabin. All passengers and crew escaped unhurt, but the incident highlighted the vulnerabilities of the airline’s older planes.
