Weapons will hit streaming just in time for Halloween

‘Tis the season for spooky content. Halloween is quickly approaching and, while you may have your entire scary movie binge schedule laid out, one of the best horror movies of the year is heading to streaming before month’s end.

Weapons, from Barbarian writer/director Zach Cregger, will stream exclusively on HBO Max as of Friday, Oct. 24. If you’d rather watch it the old-fashioned way, it will air on HBO the following night, Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. EDT. This comes after Weapons was a hit at the box office, making $267 million on a budget of only $38 million.

The film stars Julia Garner (Fantastic 4: The First Steps) as a small-town teacher who arrives to work one day only to realize all but one of her students mysteriously disappeared overnight. While terror grips the town and accusations are thrown around — especially at the teacher — the story slowly reveals truth behind the disappearances, making for the sort of revelation you could only expect from the guy that made Barbarian.

We =really dug Weapons. As Jesse Hassenger wrote in our review, “Weapons is masterfully entertaining and far more ambitious than Barbarian, and it feels more personal in the abstract. It more closely resembles a collage of nightmares than the expertly calibrated rollercoaster ride of Cregger’s previous film.”

Weapons also stars Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), in case you are wondering what a bunch of Disney stars are doing when not saving the world and/or universe. Joining them are Austin Abrams (Euphoria), Amy Madigan (Antlers), and Cary Christopher as the one student that didn’t disappear.

If you don’t want to wait for Weapons to arrive on Oct. 24 on HBO Max, you can rent it digitally right now.
