VIDEO: Will Chris Scott show his face at Queen’s Park tomorrow?

‘The people of Sault Ste. Marie need somebody who’s there right now fighting for them’: During an interview on Village Media’s ‘Closer Look’ podcast, NDP leader Marit Stiles weighed in on our local MPP

Ontario MPPs are scheduled to return to the legislature on Monday. Will Chris Scott join them?

Sault Ste. Marie’s provincial representative was booted from Premier Ford’s PC caucus last month after he was arrested for alleged spousal assault, and is now sitting as an Independent.

Scott has called the charges “baseless,” and in a statement released on Oct. 2 he said he has “trust and confidence in the criminal justice system.”

In the same statement, Scott announced he was taking a “short leave from partisan and non-essential public appearances” but remains “fully committed to serving the people of Sault Ste. Marie as I was elected to do.”

It’s not clear when his leave will end.

In the meantime, the chorus of people calling for Scott’s resignation continues to grow — including a new website launched by the NDP and the Ontario Federation of Labour.

“Has Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott resigned yet?” the website asks.

During a visit to the Sault last week, NDP leader Marit Stiles joined our Closer Look podcast for an interview. She said there are “real threats” facing this community that require a “strong voice” at Queen’s Park.

“I do think he should resign,” Stiles said. “And I don’t say that lightly, those are very serious allegations and charges. But you know, really importantly — and this is what I’m hearing as I’ve been in town — is the people of Sault Ste. Marie need somebody who’s there right now fighting for them.”
