The reason why the Conwy Tunnel was closed suddenly this morning (Monday), has been confirmed by the Welsh Government. Senedd transport chiefs said it was due to a fault with the “safety systems”, as efforts continue to repair the issue.
Motorists were facing gridlock and major delays with queues stretching back to Penmaenmawr and Colwyn Bay. You can get all the latest on the closure here.
A Welsh Government statement said: “The Conwy Tunnel has been closed due to a fault identified with the safety systems within the tunnel. Work is going on at pace to investigate the fault and rectify it as soon as possible.
“For the safety of the travelling public, it is not possible for traffic to go through the tunnel until the fault is repaired. We will provide updates via Traffic Wales and we urge people to allow more time for their journeys.”

Janet Finch-Saunders, the MS for Aberconwy said: “The A55 Conwy Tunnel is a vital transport artery for North West Wales, so the traffic chaos caused with its closure is unsurprising.
“I have every confidence that the Traffic Wales team are using all the levers at their disposal to identify the cause of the problems and deliver a solution.
“We can all help them and all communities on the diversion route by only travelling if totally necessary.”
