Wyandotte woman uses ChatGPT to pick winning Powerball numbers

A Wyandotte woman said she used artificial intelligence technology to pick a set of Powerball numbers — and the tool spit out a winning set.

Tammy Carvey, 45, matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Sept. 6 Powerball drawing and won a $50,000 prize using ChatGPT; her winnings doubled to $100,000 through the Power Play.

“I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there and the jackpot was over $1 billion so I bought a ticket,” Carvey said in a press release. “I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket. … My husband and I were in total disbelief.”

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence and deployment company, according to its website.

Carvey said she plans to pay off her home with her winnings, then save the rest.

Michigan Lottery warned people that the results of drawings are random and cannot be predicted using AI or other number-generating tools.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at michiganlottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1.

For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states; Washington D.C.; U.S. Virgin Islands; and Puerto Rico.
