West Ham vs Brentford preview

Monday night’s Premier League fixture at the London Stadium pits the movable object against the stoppable force.

West Ham have lost their three home games by an aggregate score of 10-2 and visitors Brentford started the campaign with away defeats at Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham.

The Bees were 3-0 down at half-time in their opener at Forest, whose manager Nuno Espirito Santo is now in charge of the Hammers.

Nuno is desperate to mark his home debut with a victory after overseeing a 1-1 draw at Everton and a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, where Gunners goalkeeper David Raya did not have to make a save.

The toxic atmosphere at the London Stadium has eroded West Ham’s home advantage as fans voice their discontent with the club’s owners.

The Hammers’ only win in their last 11 Premier League home games came against relegated Leicester last season and they have lost 5-1 to Chelsea, 3-0 to Tottenham and 2-1 to Crystal Palace this term.

Summer signings Mateus Fernandes and Soungoutou Magassa add energy to a ponderous midfield so the leaden-footed Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse may have limited opportunities under Nuno.

But the injury-prone Callum Wilson and Niclas Fullkrug are hardly the most dynamic striking options in the division and West Ham’s defence remains flaky.

Brentford have scored in all three of their away defeats, also winning 2-0 at Bournemouth in the EFL Cup, and they triumphed on three of their last four trips to the London Stadium.

Like the Hammers, they are far from convincing in defence so backing over 1.5 Brentford goals looks the best bet in a trappy contest.

Their recent home results include a 2-2 draw with Chelsea and a 3-1 win over Manchester United and Fabio Carvalho offers the kind of spark off the bench that West Ham are lacking.

Striker Thiago’s tussles could catch the referee’s eye

Brentford striker Igor Thiago has scored five goals in eight games this term, also missing a great chance when put through one-on-one with Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Bees’ 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The frontman does not shy away from the physical battle, averaging 2.4 fouls per 90 minutes, and he was booked against Sunderland and Chelsea in the league and Bournemouth in the EFL Cup.

Collins primed to take advantage of Hammers’ weakness

West Ham’s vulnerability against crosses, from open play and dead-ball situations, is no secret and Michael Keane’s thumping header gave Everton the lead in Nuno’s first game in charge.

Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins merits an each-way bet to score first at a huge price. He had six attempts at goal in Ireland’s four World Cup qualifiers and scored the Bees’ winner at home to the Hammers in November 2023.
