Anthony Albanese-Trump meeting LIVE updates: PM set to meet US President in Washington

There was a seriously awkward moment when Trump was asked by Sky News’ Andrews Clennell about the nine-month wait for a meeting, and whether it had anything to do with Australia’s position on climate change, Palestine, or Rudd’s old tweets about the president.

You’ll recall that Rudd once described Trump on Twitter as “the most destructive president in history” who “drags America and democracy through the mud”.

He also called Trump “a traitor to the west”.

Trump responded by saying he didn’t know anything about the disparaging posts, without realising Rudd was in the room.

“I don’t know anything about him. If he said bad then maybe he’d like to apologise,” Trump said.

He then turned to Albanese and asked: “Did an ambassador say something bad? Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know. Where is he, is he still working for you?“

It was then pointed out that Rudd was sitting right in front of him.

“You said bad?” Trump asked Rudd.

Rudd replied: “Before I took this position, Mr President. I withdraw those statements.

“Trump then said: “I don’t like you either,” to laughter.

“And I probably never will.”

It was not entirely clear if Trump was being serious or speaking in jest.
