The Edmonton Oilers will have to stage a late rally without one of their forwards.
Oilers forward Kasperi Kapanen exited Sunday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings after suffering an injury, the team announced.
The Oilers were down 3-1 when he was ultimately ruled out.
It’s unclear how Kapanen got injured, but his final shift came at the start of the second period. He went back to the locker room after the shift and did not return.
Kapanen exited the game with three hits, one shot blocked and 5:43 of ice time.
The 29-year-old has one assist in six games this season, and coming into Sunday’s outing, he averaged 13:36 of ice time a night.
He joined the Oilers midway through last season after being waived by the St. Louis Blues. He finished the season with six goals and eight assists in 67 games and added three goals and three assists in 12 post-season games.
