1 bicyclist killed, 2 others injured in Huntington Beach crash; driver arrested

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — One bicyclist was killed, and two others were injured Monday morning after they were hit by a car in Huntington Beach, police said.
Officers responded to the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Newland Street just after 6:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving three bicyclists and a vehicle.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, the bicyclists, who were identified only as adult males, were found in the roadway.
One died at the scene and the remaining two were sent to nearby hospitals with severe injuries, police said.
Police said a preliminary investigation shows that a 2006 gold Mercedes E-Class hit the bicyclists who were riding in the bike lane.
The bicycles were left mangled by the crash, with debris strewn as much as 50 feet from the point of impact.
The driver, 43-year-old Amber Calderon of Long Beach, was arrested about half a mile from the scene. Police said she was arrested for felony hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter, and possession of narcotics.
“They were hit from behind,” said Huntington Beach resident Ron Wortman. “Somebody just came into the bike lane and took them out.”
Some cyclists told ABC7 that conditions were foggy Monday morning in the area where the fatal crash occurred.
“If you’re a cyclist you know what to do, you’re not afraid of the cars,” Wortman said. “But we can be hit.”
The cause of the crash and whether impairment or any other factors played a role remain under investigation.
“It’s 50 miles an hour,” Huntington Beach resident David O’Connor said. “I usually stay on the bike trail but occasionally I want to head down to Newport and I do ride on PCH. I have my rear-view mirror on my bike and I keep an eye on it. It’s … yes, it’s … beware.”
Anyone who may have seen the crash or events is urged to contact the Huntington Beach Police Department at (714) 536-5670.
