The announcement comes as Steve Tandy launches his new era as Wales head coach

Wales lock Will Rowlands has announced his retirement from international rugby ahead of the autumn internationals.

The 34-year-old, who has been a mainstay in the Welsh pack for the past five years, bows out with 41 caps, three tries, and a Six Nations title in 2021, while he was also named Wales Men’s Player of the Year in 2022.

Rowlands’ decision was made public just minutes before head coach Steve Tandy is set to name his squad for the upcoming autumn campaign — his first in charge since succeeding Warren Gatland earlier this year. You can follow live updates of that here.

Tandy paid tribute to the Racing 92 lock, praising both his quality and his character within the national setup.

“Will has been an amazing servant for the game in Welsh rugby,” Tandy said.

“He’s been an outstanding player and a great human being in the environment.

“Whoever’s spoken about Will said he added so much value to the national game, both on and off the pitch.

“Obviously it’s disappointing for us to lose a player of that quality, but we’re totally understanding around his circumstance and wish him all the best for his future.”

Rowlands made his debut in 2020 and quickly established himself as one of Wales’ most consistent forwards, known for his towering lineout presence and relentless work rate.

He featured prominently at both the 2023 Rugby World Cup and during Wales’ Six Nations campaigns in recent years.

His departure, however, opens the door for the next generation. Rhys Davies and James Fender are among the young locks tipped to step up as a new era begins under Tandy’s leadership.

While Rowlands’ absence will be keenly felt, his legacy as a dependable, intelligent and committed performer for Wales is already firmly secured.
