Jeff’s King of the Court Pick for Tuesday, October 21: Luka Doncic
I don’t love beginning the season with an uninspiring chalk pick, but a lot of signs point towards Luka Doncic running away with the King of the Court crown on Opening Night.
For years, Doncic was either No. 1 or No. 2 in usage rate in the league as the heartbeat of the Mavericks’ offense, typically hovering between 35% and 38%. However, after being dealt to the Lakers midseason last year, he had to learn how to play alongside another superstar in LeBron James. As a result, Doncic finished the season with a 32.8% usage rate.
With James out of the equation for roughly a month, Luka now has a chance to really put his stamp on L.A.’s offense. Everything is going to run through the MVP candidate from a scoring and playmaking perspective, with Austin Reaves also receiving a decent bump in James’ absence.
On a small slate, Doncic is the only real PRA monster, as Gilgeous-Alexander, Curry and Durant tend to operate as scoring specialists. I’m expecting a near 50-PRA finish or more for the Lakers’ superstar as he makes a statement out of the gates.
That’s my King of the Court pick and preview for Opening night on Tuesday, October 21! Stay tuned for more picks every week!
