Dan Childs’s EFL predictions

Southampton have reached the ten-game mark of the Championship season with just two wins and 12 points on the board, but they have played better than their lower mid-table position and are worth backing to defeat seventh-placed Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Tuesday.

As a relegated club with a big budget and a talented squad, Southampton are under pressure to be competing at the top of the division.

With over a fifth of the games out of the way, they find themselves five points adrift of the playoffs and nine short of the top two, but head coach Will Still is staying positive and said he saw a lot of good things at the weekend when his team drew 0-0 at home to Swansea.

Still’s side were almost totally dominant against the Swans – winning the shot count 21-6 and the xG 3.26 to 0.21, but they were denied by a combination of loose finishing, outstanding goalkeeping and sheer bad luck as Caspar Jander’s second half effort hit the inside of the post before rolling agonisingly across the goal to safety.

Swansea were delighted to escape with a point, but Southampton seem to be on the brink of a breakthrough and that may arrive against a Bristol City side who are depleted by injuries to midfield quartet Max Bird (calf), Jason Knight (groin), Joe Williams (ankle) and Josh Stokes (foot).

City snapped a four-game winless run with Saturday’s well-deserved 1-0 win at Norwich, but they face a tougher task against the Saints and are likely to come up short.

Norwich’s grim start to the campaign could continue when they take on fellow strugglers Derby at Pride Park.

Pressure is mounting on both clubs, but Derby are more likely to find the right response after their dismal 1-0 loss away to Oxford.

The Rams drew 1-1 with Southampton in their last home game and a similar level of performance would probably be sufficient to secure maximum points against the Canaries, who are on a three-game losing sequence.
