PSV defender Sergiño Dest was dropped from the starting lineup after arriving late for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Napoli.

Dest appeared alongside PSV manager Peter Bosz at Monday’s pre-match press conference, strongly indicating he was set to start in Eindhoven.

But Bosz revealed that the U.S. men’s national team defender didn’t arrive at the stadium on time on Tuesday, forcing his removal from the lineup.

“Sergiño was late, so you don’t play. It wasn’t a difficult decision at all; we made agreements. Everyone has to stick to them, including him,” Bosz told Ziggo Sport ahead of the match.

“Very unfortunate for us, and for him too. He would have loved to show up. For me, one second is too late, but it was much more. You can just be on time, come on.”

Bosz added: “This happens at every club; we set the bar high in everything, including discipline. Other clubs will handle it differently, but if you don’t, everyone knows the consequences. I never considered making a different decision for a second.”

Dest has been a fixture for PSV this season when healthy, starting nine of the team’s 12 matches in all competitions. The right back has a goal and three assists.

The defender made his USMNT return last month after an absence of 18 months following a torn ACL. He was held out of this month’s squad due to a minor injury.

Dest’s punishment was reminiscent of a similar incident two years earlier with his international teammate Malik Tillman.

Tillman, then in his first season at PSV, was dropped by Bosz for a game at Almere City after he overslept.
