Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer extends point streak to tie NHL record

With an assist in the first period against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, the New York Islanders rookie tied the record for the longest point streak to begin a career by a defenceman at six games.
Schaefer now sits even with Marek Zidlicky, who set the record during the 2003-04 season with Nashville.
The Islanders selected Schaefer first overall in the 2025 draft, and he’s made a strong impression with his elite skating and offensive abilities. Including his goal and assist against the Sharks, the 18-year-old is now up to two goals and five assists, and has registered at least one point in every contest.
During the 2024-25 season, Schaefer posted 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 17 games with Erie of the OHL, and added a goal and an assist with Team Canada during the World Juniors tournament before suffering a season-ending injury.
