New Look at Amazon’s Beloved Dystopian Action Series Confirms It Will Be a “Buddy Road Trip”

A new image from Fallout Season 2 has been released from the vault, less than two months before fans head back to the Wasteland for a second time. Prime Video‘s live-action adaptation of Bethesda’s popular video game series will return for its sophomore run this December, with Ella Purnell‘s Lucy MacLean and Walton Goggins‘ The Ghoul venturing into New Vegas territory in search of Kyle MacLachlan‘s Power Armor-clad Hank MacLean, who landed on the outskirts of the city at the end of the last season. The latest photo captures part of the duo’s journey, which is being described as a “buddy road trip” across the Mojave.
The image, which arrives courtesy of Empire Magazine, captures Lucy and The Ghoul mid-conversation, with nothing but the open road ahead of them. It looks like their isolated surroundings could potentially become the perfect breeding ground for some deep and meaningful discussions between the pair, which might end up changing the two lead protagonists in unexpected ways. “At times, it’s like [they] are on this buddy road trip,” Purnell told the outlet of their forthcoming trek towards New Vegas. “And then other times, they’re so much at arms. They’re trying to influence each other and see who’s going to rub off on whom. Is the Ghoul going to become good? Is Lucy going to become bad? Or are they going to be somewhere in the middle?”
The duo will be joined by some familiar faces and a number of newcomers across the series. The first trailer for Fallout Season 2 showed a glimpse of a powerful figure from the Ghoul’s past, back when he went by the name of Cooper Howard. The sinister Robert Edwin House, aka Mr. House, played by Justin Theroux, appeared in a flashback scene before the world was ravaged by nuclear explosions. The founder, President, and CEO of RobCo Industries issued a stark warning to Howard that “the bombs will only be the beginning.” According to Theroux, the two characters will exchange more than a few words in the coming episodes:
“We have a couple of really incredible scenes that are just these big, heavyweight bouts of intellect. It was like doing Waiting For Godot in the middle of the whole thing.”
What to Expect From ‘Fallout’ Season 2

Fallout Season 2 is expected to heavily feature pre-war flashbacks to further explore The Ghoul’s backstory and the events leading up to the nuclear apocalypse. However, there will also be plenty of action unfolding in the present day, as the new Wasteland Mojave landscape will no doubt play host to several Easter eggs, creatures, and characters from the Fallout: New Vegas video game, while the expansion into the New Vegas domain will introduce new factions like Caesar’s Legion. In the midst of it all will be Lucy and The Ghoul’s “buddy road trip” dynamic, which might see them challenging each other’s moral compasses — as well as their internal directional compasses on the road to finding Hank and uncovering the truth.
Fallout has already been renewed for a third season, so fans shouldn’t expect to find out all the answers in the next batch of episodes. In fact, it is likely that the finale will end on a cliffhanger. However, Amazon’s decision to allow showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet to continue the story is a promising sign and a strong vote of confidence from the company. It signifies that the team are impressed with the show’s overall quality, potential viewership, and its ability to continue to add value to its streaming service’s extensive library of content offerings, following on from the phenomenal success of the first season.
Fallout Season 2 is set to premiere on Prime Video on Dec. 17, 2025.
