Warriors reveal some Al Horford plans, but starting decision still in question

The Golden State Warriors made a key pickup late in the offseason when they finally signed Al Horford in free agency.

The veteran center joins one of the most experienced, winningest groups in the NBA to seek one more run at a ring.

There are just still some questions surrounding Horford as the Warriors approach their season opener Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers.

It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether Horford will start, for one.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has shared that Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green will start. That’s four, but the fifth is, as of now, a mystery.

Horford is the logical candidate, assuming the Warriors don’t want to start Green at center. But Golden State also has Trayce Jackson-Davis and Quentin Post, and could use Horford off the bench to manage his minutes.

If Green starts at center, a guy like Jonathan Kuminga could start, too.

That will likely begin to be cleared up Tuesday night.

There’s another Horford aspect that has been made clear.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Horford won’t play in back-to-backs this season.

That’s not particularly a surprise. Horford hasn’t played a back-to-back since 2022.

That could also be what is holding up the starting lineup decision. Do you start Horford, knowing that in some sequences he’ll be out entirely?

Figuring out how to use Horford is a good problem for the Warriors to have. It’ll be interesting to see what solutions they arrive at.
