Breaking up is hard to do—especially when the person you’re trying to break up with is texting. Just ask Nick Amato of Love Is Blind season 9, who struggled to keep Annie Lancaster’s attention when she pulled out her phone mid-breakup. It might be cringe-worthy behavior, but Annie’s texts have become crucial to the season 9 LIB lore, as fans are convinced that Nick and Annie’s breakup was staged for the cameras.
Allow me to explain. When Annie took out her phone, cameras caught a glimpse of her messages, and while we don’t know who she was texting (the contact information appears to have been edited out), Annie’s texts have raised eyebrows.

“Hi, 90 percent sure no wedding,” read her previously sent text. She was in the middle of typing a reply to explain why when the camera cut away. All we saw her type was, “Currently filming, Nick wo—”
There are no time stamps on the texts, but the editing makes it look like she sent the text about being “90 percent sure” the wedding was off before her talk with Nick even started, which has fans thinking it might have all been staged. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time LIB has asked contestants to relive moments in their relationships for the cameras. But, if Nick and Annie’s breakup really was staged, why would Netflix keep the texts in the edit?

My theory is that Annie was called into film unexpectedly and suspected that Nick was about to end their engagement. She then texted someone her suspicions, and that’s what we see in the episode. It’s also possible that she sent all of the texts during the breakup—the magic of editing!—and that she was somehow under the impression that she had a 10 percent chance of getting Nick to change his mind. Either way, I don’t think this is definitive proof that their breakup was staged for the cameras.
Hopefully Nick and Vanessa Lachey will get the real story when the cast meets up for the Love Is Blind season 9 reunion next week.
