Alexei Popyrin vs Matteo Berrettini Preview: Head-to-Head and Prediction for Vienna Open 2025

Former Masters 1000 champion Alexei Popyrin is set to take on former Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini in an intriguing first-round contest at the 2025 Vienna Open. Popyrin’s 2025 season has been relatively poor as the Australian has a losing record for the year. He had some decent quarterfinal runs in Monte-Carlo and Toronto, but at the same time, could not make it past the second round in as many as 13 events he played in.
Injuries have prevented Matteo Berrettini from playing a full season, as the Italian has played only 30 matches this year. His one notable run came at the Miami Open, where he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Taylor Fritz in a tough three-set battle. Both Popyrin and Berrettini are coming into Vienna after playing in Stockholm, where the Australian bowed out in the first round, and the Italian could win only one match.

Popyrin vs Berrettini Head-to-Head
In the three times they have played each other, Berrettini has a 2-1 lead in the head-to-head against Popyrin. The Italian won the first two matches between the two, including a win at the 2021 Vienna Open. However, the Australian won 7-5, 7-6(2) at their last outing at the 2024 Paris Masters.
Popyrin has won two hard-court titles in his career. His maiden title came indoors at the 2021 Singapore Open, where he defeated Alexander Bublik in the final. His biggest title to date also went on a hard court, as he clinched the Masters 1000 title in Canada last year. This year, however, the Australian has a record of 7 wins and 12 losses on the hard courts.
Berrettini’s only hard-court success on the ATP Tour was reaching the final of the Tennis Napoli Cup in 2022, losing out to fellow countryman Lorenzo Musetti. All of Berrettini’s ten career titles have come either on clay or on grass courts. However, the Italian is no pushover on the hard courts, as he has reached semifinals at both the hard-court Majors in his career.

Both players coming into this event have not been in good form in recent months, with Popyrin struggling with form, and Berrettini struggling with injuries and form. However, the Italian’s big-serving ability will have an advantage for him on the indoor hard courts, but he will have to fare better on the return games, as his tiebreak record has been poor this year.
For Popyrin to make a mark in this match, he must win near or over 70 percent of the service points, which is more than the Australian average (64 percent) for the season. However, given that Berrettini has previously beaten Popyrin on the same court, the Italian might have the slight edge in the upcoming match.
Pick- Berrettini will win in three sets.
